How common is knee swelling in a Baker's cyst?

A Baker's cyst is a fluid-filled swelling that forms behind the knee when excess joint fluid moves into a small sac. Swelling may feel like pressure or fullness and can become more noticeable when the knee is straight. The knee may also feel stiff, particularly after activity. A Baker's cyst often reflects irritation inside the joint, such as arthritis or a cartilage problem, so the cyst is not always the only issue to assess.

Reduce activities that increase pressure or discomfort, and use comfortable gentle movement rather than forcing the knee into deep bending. Elevating the leg and applying a wrapped cold pack for short periods may ease symptoms. Arrange an assessment if the swelling persists, limits walking, or returns repeatedly. Treatment focuses on the underlying joint irritation as well as the cyst when needed.
