Short answer

Knee Locking is a common presentation of Plica Syndrome when an irritated fold of tissue catches during knee movement.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Typical trigger
Repeated bending, stairs, squats, or increased activity

Painful catching is different from a joint that stays blocked

How plica irritation affects the knee

A plica is a fold of joint lining. When it becomes thickened or irritated, it may rub as the knee bends and straightens. People may feel a snap, click, tender area beside the kneecap, or a catching sensation. Repeated bending, stairs, squats, and sudden increases in activity can make symptoms more noticeable.

Plica syndrome can present with knee locking, but locking is not specific to this condition. A clinician will ask about activity, injury, swelling, and the exact point where motion catches. Examination helps distinguish a painful catch caused by irritated tissue from a knee that is physically blocked.

Ways to settle irritation

Temporarily reduce stairs, deep squats, kneeling, and repetitive bending if they reproduce the catch. Choose low-impact movement within a comfortable range and avoid pushing through sharp pain. A cloth-wrapped cold pack may help after activity when swelling or soreness is present.

Arrange a physiotherapy or orthopaedic assessment if symptoms continue, recur, or limit normal movement. A plan may address hip and thigh strength, flexibility, movement technique, and a gradual return to activity. If the knee remains mechanically blocked, further assessment is needed rather than repeated stretching.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care if the knee becomes stuck, you cannot bear weight, or a new injury causes substantial swelling or severe pain. Get prompt help if the leg looks deformed or the foot becomes numb, cold, pale, or weak. Do not force a blocked knee to move.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the catching fits plica irritation, which activities to modify, and which exercises are appropriate. Ask what findings would suggest another cause and when you should return if the knee starts locking more often.

Questions people ask

Does knee locking confirm plica syndrome?

No. Several knee conditions can cause catching or restricted motion, so an examination is needed.

Can physiotherapy help plica-related symptoms?

A tailored programme can reduce aggravating load and improve movement control, but persistent blockage needs medical review.
