How common is joint stiffness in osteoarthritis?

Short answer
Joint Stiffness is a very common presentation of Osteoarthritis, often changing with rest, activity and the affected joint.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How osteoarthritis stiffness behaves
Osteoarthritis can affect the smooth tissues and supporting structures around a joint. Stiffness may be noticeable when you first get up, after sitting, or when you start moving after a rest. Knees, hips, hands, feet and the spine can be affected. The joint may also ache with use, feel less flexible or swell from time to time.
Stiffness has more than one possible cause, and its presence does not identify osteoarthritis by itself. Assessment considers the joint involved, the symptom pattern, movement, strength and any history of injury or other illness.
Managing daily stiffness
Regular, suitable movement often supports joint function better than prolonged inactivity. Try gentle range-of-motion exercises, short walks or water-based activity if these are comfortable and appropriate for you. Pace tasks, change position during the day and use a physiotherapy plan when advised. Seek review if pain, swelling or reduced function begins to interfere with sleep, work or personal care.
When to seek prompt care
Get urgent medical advice for a suddenly swollen, hot or very painful joint, especially with fever or feeling unwell. Seek prompt assessment after an injury if you cannot bear weight or use the joint. New weakness, loss of sensation or rapidly worsening function also warrants timely review rather than assuming it is routine osteoarthritis.
Questions for your appointment
Ask which activities and strengthening exercises suit your joint, how to respond to a flare of pain, and whether another cause of stiffness should be checked. Ask about a review plan if movement or everyday function continues to decline.

Questions people ask
Does joint stiffness mean osteoarthritis?
No. Joint stiffness can occur with many conditions. The affected joint, timing, examination and medical history help clarify the cause.
Is rest the best response to osteoarthritis stiffness?
Long periods of inactivity may make stiffness harder to manage. Gentle, suitable movement and pacing are often more helpful, with advice tailored to your symptoms.
