Short answer

Joint pain is a common presentation of influenza and may occur alongside body aches, fever, and respiratory symptoms.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why aches occur with influenza

Influenza is a viral infection that can cause inflammation throughout the body. Aching can be felt around joints and muscles rather than being limited to one joint. It may appear with fever, chills, headache, tiredness, cough, sore throat, or a blocked or runny nose. Joint pain without these features has many possible explanations and does not by itself establish influenza.

Caring for yourself

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and choose light meals if you can manage them. Avoid strenuous exercise while feverish or significantly unwell. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on pain and fever medicines that are suitable with your age, medical conditions, and other medicines. Stay home while acutely unwell where possible, and use good hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette to reduce spread.

Signs that need medical attention

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, persistent chest pain, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, severe dehydration, or a sudden major deterioration. Contact a clinician sooner if you are pregnant, have a long-term health condition, take medicines that affect immunity, or symptoms are worsening rather than improving. A hot, swollen single joint with fever also needs prompt assessment.

What to ask

Ask whether your symptoms are consistent with influenza or another infection, which treatments are appropriate, and what warning signs apply to you. If joint discomfort continues after the acute illness, ask whether it needs a separate assessment.
