How common is joint pain in gout?

Gout happens when crystals form in and around a joint and trigger inflammation. The pain may arrive quickly and can be intense, with swelling, warmth, tenderness, or skin that looks red or darker than usual. It often starts in one joint, although other joints can be involved. Joint pain has many causes, so pain alone does not identify gout.

Rest the affected area and avoid forcing a painful joint through activity. A cool pack wrapped in cloth may feel soothing. Keep a note of when the pain began, which joint was involved, and any swelling or fever.

Seek urgent medical care for a hot, very swollen joint with fever, chills, feeling unwell, or an inability to move or bear weight on the limb. These features can also occur with a joint infection, which needs prompt assessment. Get medical advice if pain is worsening, follows an injury, or does not settle as expected.
