How common is joint pain in dengue fever?

Dengue can produce strong aches in joints and muscles during a febrile illness. Pain may be accompanied by headache, pain behind the eyes, nausea, rash or marked tiredness. Symptoms can change as the fever settles, so feeling better for a short time does not always mean the illness has fully passed.

Joint pain is not specific to dengue. Other viral illnesses, chikungunya, medication effects and ordinary joint problems can feel similar. A clinician may consider local infection risk, fever timing, examination findings and testing, especially when warning symptoms are present.

Rest and take frequent fluids if you can, while monitoring your alertness and urine output. Ask a healthcare professional which pain relief is suitable. Avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory medicines unless a clinician specifically tells you to use them, because dengue can increase bleeding risk.

Note fever readings, pain intensity, vomiting, rash, bleeding, abdominal pain and how much you are drinking. Use mosquito protection during the illness to reduce the chance of mosquitoes picking up and spreading the virus.

Seek urgent care for bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, cold clammy skin or very little urine. Urgent review is also needed if a fever improves and then you become more unwell.
