How common is joint pain in chikungunya?

Short answer
Joint Pain is a very common presentation of Chikungunya and can be intense during the acute illness.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- How often
- Very common with chikungunya
- Typical pattern
- Several joints may hurt or feel stiff
- Recovery
- Pain can continue after fever improves
What the symptom can look like
Chikungunya often causes sudden fever with pain and stiffness in several joints. Hands, wrists, ankles, knees and feet may be affected, and movement can become difficult. A rash, headache, muscle aches or tiredness may occur at the same time.
Joint symptoms can continue after the fever settles and may fluctuate during recovery. The symptom alone cannot distinguish chikungunya from dengue, other mosquito-borne infections or non-infectious causes. Recent travel or mosquito exposure, the timing of fever and any bleeding symptoms are useful details for a clinician.
Supporting yourself safely
Rest, drink fluids regularly if you can, and use gentle movement within your comfort to reduce stiffness. Ask a clinician or pharmacist which pain medicine suits you, especially while dengue has not been excluded; some medicines can increase bleeding risk.
Record fever, swelling, rash, bleeding, urine output and how your movement changes. Avoid mosquito bites while unwell by using suitable protection, because mosquitoes can acquire the virus from an infected person and pass it on.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent medical help for bleeding, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, very little urine or inability to drink. Contact a clinician promptly if joint swelling is rapidly worsening, pain prevents walking or fever returns after improving.
Questions for your doctor
Do my fever, travel and mosquito exposure warrant testing for chikungunya or another infection? Which pain medicines are safe before dengue is excluded? How much activity is suitable, and what signs would suggest lingering joint inflammation?

Questions people ask
Does joint pain prove that I have chikungunya?
No. Joint pain occurs for many reasons, and diagnosis considers fever, exposures, examination and testing when needed.
Can joint pain last after chikungunya fever?
Yes. Some people continue to have fluctuating pain or stiffness after the acute fever has settled and may need follow-up.
