How common is joint pain in brucellosis?

Brucellosis can cause a general inflammatory illness with pain, stiffness and reduced movement. The discomfort may involve one joint or several, and back or pelvic pain can occur when deeper joints are affected. Fever, sweating, chills, weakness or loss of appetite may appear alongside the musculoskeletal symptoms.

The pattern is not specific to brucellosis. Similar pain can follow an injury, another infection or an inflammatory joint condition. Tell a clinician about contact with livestock, unpasteurised dairy products, animal tissue or travel, because exposure history helps decide which tests are appropriate.

Book a medical assessment for new joint pain with fever, marked fatigue or a relevant animal or food exposure. Until reviewed, rest the painful area without keeping it completely still, drink fluids if you can, and use only pain relief that is safe with your health conditions and current medicines.

Write down the affected joints, stiffness after rest, temperature symptoms, exposure dates and any antibiotics already taken. Brucellosis requires specific medical treatment; do not rely on leftover antibiotics or stop a prescribed course early.

Get urgent help if a painful joint is hot, swollen and difficult to move, or if joint pain comes with severe weakness, confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, persistent vomiting or a severe headache. Same-day assessment is sensible for fever with rapidly worsening pain or difficulty walking.
