How common is jaundice in liver metastases?

Liver metastases are cancer cells that have spread to the liver from another part of the body. The liver handles bilirubin and produces bile. Deposits can interfere with these functions or narrow the channels that carry bile away. Bilirubin may build up, causing yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, and itching.

Jaundice can reflect the location and effect of the deposits, but its appearance does not describe the whole cancer picture. Your care team may use blood tests and scans to assess liver function, bile drainage, and the source cancer.

Tell your oncology or medical team promptly about new yellowing, worsening itch, dark urine, pale stools, nausea, or right-sided abdominal discomfort. Keep a record of symptom changes and all medicines. Your team may consider treatment for the underlying cancer, support for symptoms, or a procedure to improve bile drainage when appropriate.

Get urgent help for fever or chills with jaundice, severe or persistent pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, marked drowsiness, bleeding, or inability to keep fluids down. Infection in a blocked bile duct can become serious and requires rapid assessment.

Ask whether the jaundice suggests impaired bile drainage, which tests will clarify the cause, how symptoms can be relieved, and whom to contact outside clinic hours.
