How common is jaundice in liver cancer?

Liver cancer can interfere with the liver's handling of bilirubin or press on bile ducts, causing yellow eyes or skin. Dark urine, pale stools, itching, reduced appetite, weight loss, tiredness, abdominal swelling, or discomfort beneath the ribs may also occur. Jaundice has many other causes, including infections, gallstones, and medicines, so yellowing alone does not establish cancer.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for new jaundice, whether or not cancer is already known. A clinician may examine you and arrange blood tests and imaging to assess the liver, bile ducts, and surrounding structures. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, and mention previous liver disease, hepatitis, alcohol use, pain, itching, appetite changes, or weight changes. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice.

Seek urgent care for jaundice with fever or chills, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, unusual sleepiness, fainting, or inability to drink. A rapidly worsening yellow colour, new bleeding, or marked abdominal swelling also needs same-day medical advice. These signs can reflect infection, bile obstruction, or impaired liver function.

Ask what may be causing the jaundice, which blood tests and scans are needed, whether a bile duct is obstructed, and how symptoms can be relieved. Ask which warning signs require emergency care and who to contact outside clinic hours.
