How common is jaundice in fatty liver disease?

Fatty liver disease can range from fat buildup without major inflammation to liver injury with scarring. Jaundice may develop when the liver cannot process or move bile effectively. Yellow skin or eyes may occur with dark urine, pale stools, itching, tiredness, nausea, or swelling. Because jaundice can also result from blocked bile ducts, viral hepatitis, medicines, or blood disorders, it should not be attributed to fatty liver disease without an assessment.

Contact a clinician promptly about new jaundice. Assessment may include a physical examination, liver blood tests, medication review, and imaging when needed. Share any change in weight, alcohol intake, supplements, diabetes treatment, or abdominal symptoms. If fatty liver disease is confirmed, follow the agreed plan for nutrition, activity, and management of related conditions; avoid crash diets and unapproved supplements.

Go to urgent care for jaundice with confusion, unusual sleepiness, severe abdominal pain, fever, repeated vomiting, bleeding, or difficulty staying hydrated. Sudden worsening yellowing or new swelling of the abdomen or legs also deserves prompt review. These features can reflect significant liver dysfunction or another problem requiring immediate treatment.
