How common is itchy skin in lichen planus?

Lichen planus is an inflammatory condition that can cause itchy, raised, flat-topped, or discoloured patches and bumps. It may affect the wrists, ankles, lower back, legs, or other areas; the mouth, scalp, nails, or genitals can also be involved. Scratching can make affected areas more irritated and may create new marks along injured skin. Because several rashes can itch and change colour, diagnosis depends on examination and sometimes a skin sample.

Use a plain moisturiser and avoid fragranced washes, vigorous scrubbing, and tight clothing over affected skin. Keep nails short and try a cool compress instead of scratching. Photograph changes so your clinician can compare them over time. Treatments may include prescribed anti-inflammatory medicine or other options selected for the skin site; do not use potent creams on the face, mouth, or genitals without specific advice.

Book a dermatology assessment for a new persistent itchy rash, changes in nails or scalp, or sores in the mouth or genital area. Seek prompt care for painful ulcers, trouble eating or swallowing, eye symptoms, pus, fever, or rapidly worsening inflammation. Urgent review is needed for sudden vision changes or severe facial swelling.

Ask whether the rash needs a biopsy, which areas require separate treatment, and how to control itch without damaging the skin. Mention mouth soreness, nail changes, scalp symptoms, new medicines, and any products that worsen irritation.
