How common is itchy skin in contact dermatitis?

Contact dermatitis develops when the skin reacts to an irritant or to a substance that triggers an allergy. Itching may occur with redness, dryness, scaling, swelling, small bumps, or blisters. The hands, face, eyelids, neck, and areas exposed to products are frequent sites, but clothing, metals, cosmetics, detergents, plants, and workplace materials can affect other areas. The timing of the rash and its distribution help a clinician distinguish contact dermatitis from other causes of itchy skin.

Think back to new or changed soaps, cosmetics, hair products, jewellery, gloves, detergents, or medicines, and pause a suspected non-essential product until you receive advice. Rinse exposed skin gently, avoid scrubbing, and apply a bland fragrance-free moisturiser. Cool compresses and loose clothing may reduce discomfort. Do not restart a suspected trigger to test it yourself; a clinician can advise whether patch testing or another evaluation is appropriate.

Seek care if the rash is persistent, recurrent, extensive, painful, or affecting the eyes, mouth, or genitals. Prompt review is needed for oozing, pus, increasing warmth, fever, or rapidly expanding redness. Get urgent help for swelling of the lips or tongue, breathing trouble, dizziness, or a widespread reaction after exposure.

Ask which exposure is most suspicious, whether patch testing could help, what to use on sensitive areas, and how to protect your skin at work or during daily routines. Bring product names or photographs of ingredient lists when possible.
