How common is indigestion in gallstones?

Gallstones may disturb digestion when a stone affects the flow of bile from the gallbladder. People can describe this as upper-abdominal discomfort, fullness, nausea, burping or discomfort after eating, particularly after a rich meal. Some people with gallstones have no symptoms, so indigestion does not establish the cause by itself.

Gallstone pain is often felt in the upper right or upper middle abdomen and may last longer than ordinary brief bloating. A clinician considers the timing, location, triggers and associated symptoms before deciding whether gallstones fit the pattern.

Keep a short record of meals, discomfort, nausea, bowel changes and any pain beneath the right ribs. Arrange a medical assessment if symptoms recur, interfere with eating or do not settle. The clinician may examine your abdomen and discuss blood tests or an ultrasound when gallstones are a concern. Avoid foods that reliably trigger symptoms while waiting, but do not make major dietary changes without advice.
