How common is hoarse voice in hypothyroidism?

When thyroid hormone levels are low, changes in body tissues and fluid balance may make the voice sound deeper, rougher, or less clear. Some people also notice tiredness, feeling unusually cold, dry skin, constipation, slower thinking, or changes in hair. These symptoms can develop gradually and vary from person to person.

Hoarseness alone does not establish a thyroid problem. A cold, reflux, allergies, smoking, voice strain, or a condition affecting the vocal folds can produce a similar change. Blood tests and a clinical history help determine whether thyroid function is involved.
