How common is hoarse voice in acid reflux?

Acid reflux may reach the upper throat, sometimes without the burning feeling people associate with reflux. Repeated irritation can make the vocal folds swell, leaving the voice rough, weak, or lower than usual. Throat clearing, a sour taste, cough, or a sensation of something stuck may occur alongside the voice change.

This pattern does not identify the cause by itself. Hoarseness can also follow a cold, heavy voice use, smoke exposure, allergies, or another throat problem. A clinician considers the timing, triggers, other symptoms, and medicines before deciding whether reflux is contributing.

Notice whether hoarseness is worse after meals, when bending over, or when lying down. Smaller meals, remaining upright after eating, and avoiding personal trigger foods may reduce reflux episodes. Sip water, avoid repeated forceful throat clearing, and rest your voice when it feels strained.
