How common is hip pain in trochanteric bursitis?

Short answer
Hip pain is a very common presentation of trochanteric bursitis, particularly pain over the outer side of the hip.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common location
- Tender pain over the outer side of the hip
- Frequent aggravators
- Side-lying, stairs, uphill walking, and prolonged standing
Where the pain comes from
Trochanteric bursitis affects the tissues near the bony prominence on the outer side of the upper thigh. Pain is often tender to touch and may spread down the outer thigh. Lying on the affected side, climbing stairs, walking uphill, or standing for a long time can aggravate it. Some people notice discomfort when rising from a chair or moving the leg out to the side.
Hip pain does not by itself confirm trochanteric bursitis. Tendon irritation, hip osteoarthritis, lower-back problems, and other conditions can cause pain in the same region. An examination can assess tenderness, hip movement, muscle strength, and the effect of specific movements.
Ways to reduce irritation
Temporarily reduce activities that repeatedly compress or load the painful side, while keeping comfortable movement. Avoid lying directly on the sore side; a pillow between the knees may make side sleeping easier. Cold or warmth can be tried with a protective cloth, depending on which feels better. Physiotherapy may address hip and pelvic strength, walking mechanics, and a gradual return to normal activity.
When to seek care
Arrange a clinical review if outer-hip pain persists, disrupts sleep, changes your walking, or returns whenever activity increases. Seek prompt care after a fall if you cannot bear weight, or if the area becomes markedly red, hot, swollen, or is accompanied by fever. New numbness or weakness, or pain that mainly comes from the back and travels down the leg, also deserves assessment.
Questions to bring
Ask whether the tenderness and movement pattern fit trochanteric bursitis or another cause, which activities to modify, and how to restart strengthening safely. Discuss sleep positioning, pain relief suited to your medical history, and the symptoms that should prompt an earlier appointment.

Questions people ask
Is outer-hip tenderness typical of trochanteric bursitis?
Yes. Tenderness over the bony outer hip is a frequent feature, especially when lying on that side.
Should I stop all activity?
Usually, comfortable movement is preferable; reduce activities that sharply worsen symptoms and build back gradually with guidance.
