How common are hiccups in acid reflux?

A brief episode after eating or drinking does not identify its cause on its own. Reflux is more worth considering when hiccups occur alongside burning behind the breastbone, sour-tasting fluid in the mouth, belching, or symptoms that are worse after meals or when lying down.

A hiccup is a sudden involuntary contraction of the diaphragm followed by closure of the vocal cords. Refluxed stomach contents can irritate the food pipe and nearby nerves involved in this reflex. That irritation may make hiccups appear during a reflux flare, particularly after a large meal, fizzy drinks, alcohol, or lying flat soon after eating.

Hiccups also happen with rapid eating, swallowed air, hot or cold drinks, and some medicines. Their presence therefore does not establish that reflux is the cause.
