Short answer

Heel pain is a very common presentation of plantar fasciitis, especially near the underside of the heel.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The typical pain pattern

The plantar fascia is a strong band of tissue beneath the foot. When it becomes irritated, pain often centres on the underside of the heel and may be strongest with the first steps after waking or after sitting. It may ease as you move, then return after prolonged standing, walking, or running.

The pattern can overlap with other causes of heel pain, including a stress injury, nerve irritation, bursitis, or pain from the Achilles tendon. A clinician uses the exact location, tenderness, movement, footwear, and activity history to assess the likely source. Heel pain alone does not establish plantar fasciitis.

Ways to reduce strain

Choose supportive, comfortable footwear and avoid spending long periods barefoot on hard floors if that increases symptoms. Reduce high-impact activity temporarily, while keeping gentle movement within comfort. Calf and foot stretches may be useful when taught appropriately; a physiotherapist can tailor them and check foot and ankle mechanics.

Seek an assessment if symptoms affect daily activities, keep recurring, or do not improve with activity and footwear changes. Increase walking or sport gradually rather than making a sudden return to the previous level.

When to seek care promptly

Get prompt medical advice after a fall or other injury, if you cannot bear weight, or if swelling, bruising, numbness, or weakness is marked. A hot, red heel with fever needs urgent assessment. These features may indicate a problem other than routine plantar fascia irritation.

Questions for your doctor

Does my pain location fit plantar fasciitis? Which stretches and footwear changes are suitable? Should I modify work, walking, or sport? What should I do if first-step pain or tenderness continues?
