How common is heartburn in hiatus hernia?

A hiatus hernia occurs when part of the stomach moves upward through the opening in the diaphragm. This can affect the barrier between the stomach and food pipe, allowing stomach contents to travel upward. Heartburn may be felt behind the breastbone, particularly after meals, when bending, or when lying down.

Some people have a hiatus hernia without noticeable symptoms. Others have regurgitation, belching, cough, throat irritation, or difficulty swallowing. The presence of heartburn does not identify the cause on its own, and symptoms can overlap with ordinary reflux.

Try smaller meals, remain upright after eating, and avoid lying down soon after food. Note whether particular foods, alcohol, smoking, or tight clothing worsen symptoms. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on suitable antacid or acid-lowering treatment. If symptoms return despite these measures, a clinician can assess whether the hernia or another condition needs attention.

Seek urgent care for severe chest or abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, vomiting blood, black stools, fainting, or sudden difficulty swallowing. Chest pressure with breathlessness, sweating, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw also requires urgent assessment.
