How common is headache in influenza?

Influenza can produce a widespread inflammatory response that contributes to headache and muscle aches. Fever, blocked sinuses, coughing, poor sleep, and not drinking enough can add to the discomfort. Flu symptoms often begin relatively quickly and may leave you feeling much more unwell than an ordinary cold.

Headache does not confirm Influenza. Other respiratory viruses, migraine, sinus problems, and dehydration can cause similar pain. A clinician may consider your symptoms, examination, local circulation of infection, and health risks when deciding whether further assessment or treatment is needed.

Rest, drink regularly, and choose light meals as tolerated. Paracetamol may ease pain or fever when taken according to the label or your clinician’s instructions; check combination cold remedies so you do not take it twice. Avoid antibiotics unless prescribed, because they do not treat influenza itself.

Stay home while feverish or significantly unwell, improve ventilation, wash hands, and consider a mask around people at higher risk. Contact a clinician early if you are pregnant, immunocompromised, elderly, or living with a long-term condition, because treatment decisions may depend on timing and individual risk.

Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing, chest pain or pressure, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, seizure, severe weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. Get prompt medical advice if fever or cough improves and then returns worse, or if you are becoming dehydrated.

A sudden severe headache, stiff neck, new neurological symptoms, or a rapidly worsening condition needs urgent assessment rather than home care alone. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and those with chronic illness may need advice sooner.
