How common is itchy groin in jock itch?

Jock itch is a fungal infection affecting the groin region. It commonly produces persistent itch with a red, scaly, or sharply defined rash that may extend onto the inner thighs. Sweat, heat, tight clothing, and skin-to-skin friction can make the sensation stronger. The central fold may look less affected than the edge, although appearances vary. Groin itching can also come from irritation, eczema, or other infections, so itching by itself cannot confirm jock itch.

Keep the area clean and thoroughly dry, especially after bathing or exercise. Wear breathable underwear and change it when damp. Do not share towels or clothing, and wash garments that touch the rash. Avoid steroid-only creams unless a clinician has recommended them.

See a clinician if the rash involves the scrotum, becomes painful or swollen, develops pus or open cracks, or fails to improve with suitable antifungal care.
