How common is fever in heat stroke?

Fever is a common presentation of Heat Stroke and may occur with confusion, collapse, or hot skin. Heat stroke is a medical emergency because the body can no longer cool itself effectively. A measured temperature can be high, but the person may also feel extremely hot without a reliable reading.

Heat stroke develops when heat production and heat gain overwhelm sweating and other cooling responses. The rising body temperature can affect the brain, causing confusion, unusual behaviour, fainting, seizures, or difficulty staying awake. Nausea, headache, weakness, rapid breathing, and a fast heartbeat may occur as well. Fever from an infection is different, but heat stroke can look similar at first, so the surrounding heat exposure and mental changes matter.

Move the person to shade or a cool indoor area and remove extra clothing. Start cooling with cool wet cloths, fanning, or a cool shower while someone calls emergency services. Do not give drinks to a confused, drowsy, vomiting, or unconscious person. Stay with them, note when the heat exposure began, and tell responders about medicines or medical conditions if known.

Seek emergency care immediately for suspected heat stroke, especially with confusion, fainting, seizure, severe weakness, trouble breathing, or inability to drink. Do not wait for the temperature to fall or for symptoms to settle. A person who improves after cooling still needs medical assessment because heat injury can affect the brain, kidneys, muscles, and other organs.

Ask what signs distinguish heat exhaustion from heat stroke, how to plan cooling during outdoor activity, and whether any medicines increase sensitivity to heat. If an episode occurred, ask whether kidney or muscle tests are needed and when normal activity is safe again.
