How common is fever in gastroenteritis?

Gastroenteritis inflames the stomach and intestines, often because of an infection. The immune response may raise body temperature while the gut becomes irritated. Vomiting, watery diarrhoea, cramps, nausea, and reduced appetite may occur with the fever. Symptoms can vary between people and between causes, so fever alone cannot distinguish gastroenteritis from another illness. Pay attention to hydration, urine output, alertness, and the severity of pain.

Sip water or oral rehydration solution often rather than drinking a large amount at once. Resume light meals as appetite returns, and avoid alcohol until you are recovered. Wash hands with soap and water and avoid sharing towels, since some infections spread easily. Use fever medicine only according to the label or a clinician's instructions, and ask for advice before giving medicine to a child.

Seek urgent care for severe dehydration, fainting, confusion, severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, a swollen abdomen, or breathing difficulty. Arrange prompt medical advice when a child is unusually sleepy, an adult cannot keep fluids down, urine becomes very infrequent, fever persists, or symptoms are worsening rather than easing.

Ask how much fluid to take, whether an oral rehydration product is appropriate, which medicines to avoid, and when ongoing diarrhoea or fever needs testing.
