How common is fever in croup?

Croup is usually linked to swelling around the voice box and upper airway. The swelling can produce a harsh barking cough, a hoarse voice, and a high-pitched noise when breathing in. Fever may accompany these symptoms, often alongside a runny nose or other cold signs. A child's breathing effort matters more than the number on the thermometer: noisy breathing while resting, ribs pulling in, or difficulty speaking or crying needs prompt attention.

Keep your child calm and upright, because crying can make upper-airway noise worse. Offer frequent drinks and check that they are passing urine. Use fever medicine only as directed for the child's age and weight, and do not give aspirin to a child. Avoid steam inhalation, which can cause burns. A clinician may prescribe treatment when airway swelling is significant; do not use leftover medicines without advice.

Call emergency services if your child is struggling to breathe, has blue or grey lips, becomes unusually sleepy, cannot swallow, drools, or has pauses in breathing. Arrange urgent medical assessment for noisy breathing at rest, marked chest pulling, dehydration, or a child who is getting worse. Keep the child upright while waiting for help and avoid forcing food or drink if breathing is difficult.
