How common is fever in common cold?

A common cold is a viral infection of the upper airways. Fever may accompany a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, cough, headache, or feeling tired as the immune system responds. Symptoms often overlap with other respiratory infections, so fever alone cannot establish which infection you have. The pattern, severity, and how symptoms change over time provide useful context.

Children may look more unsettled or warm when unwell, while adults can have a cold with little or no change in temperature. A thermometer can help you check rather than relying only on how your skin feels.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and wear comfortable light clothing if you feel hot. Saline nasal drops or spray may ease a blocked nose, and warm drinks can soothe a scratchy throat. If you use a fever or pain medicine, follow the label directions and check that combination cold products do not contain the same ingredient. Stay home while you feel unwell and reduce close contact with people who may be vulnerable.

Seek medical advice if fever is severe, keeps returning, or is accompanied by difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, marked drowsiness, dehydration, or a rash that does not fade when pressed. Get help sooner for a baby, an older adult, someone pregnant, or a person with a long-term condition or weakened immune system. Advice is also sensible when symptoms are worsening instead of gradually easing or are making normal activities difficult.
