How common is fever in chickenpox?

Chickenpox commonly begins with feeling unwell, tiredness, reduced appetite, or fever before or as itchy spots appear. The rash can develop in crops, so new spots may appear while older ones blister and crust. Fever and itching can make rest difficult.

Fever can occur with many infections, so it does not confirm chickenpox by itself. The appearance and spread of the rash, contact with someone who has chickenpox, vaccination history, age, and immune health help a clinician assess the cause.

Encourage fluids, rest, loose clothing, and short nails to reduce skin damage from scratching. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on itch relief and fever medicine for the person’s age and health. Do not give aspirin to a child or teenager with a viral illness, and check before using ibuprofen.

Keep away from pregnant people, newborn babies, and people with weakened immunity until a clinician confirms it is safe to mix with others. Avoid popping blisters, and wash hands after touching the rash.

Get urgent advice for breathing difficulty, unusual sleepiness, confusion, repeated vomiting, severe headache, a stiff neck, dehydration, or a rash near the eyes. Contact a clinician promptly if the skin becomes increasingly painful, hot, swollen, or produces pus, or if fever persists or returns after the rash has started improving.
