How common is fever after birth in mastitis?

Mastitis often affects one area of the breast and may cause warmth, swelling, redness, a firm patch, or pain during feeding or expressing. Fever, chills, tiredness, and body aches can accompany the breast symptoms. Breast fullness or a blocked-feeling area can have other explanations, and postpartum fever can also come from the uterus, urinary tract, or caesarean wound.

Contact a midwife, lactation clinician, or doctor if breast pain and fever develop together, or if symptoms are worsening. Continue feeding or expressing in a way that feels manageable, avoid forceful massage, and use supportive positioning. Rest, drink fluids, and use only pain relief that is suitable for you and compatible with your medical advice. A clinician can decide whether antibiotics or another plan is appropriate.

Arrange same-day advice when fever persists, the red or painful area expands, a tender lump becomes more prominent, or you feel increasingly unwell. Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, or rapid deterioration. A persistent focal swelling may need examination for an abscess or another problem.
