How common is fatigue in hepatitis B?

Hepatitis B can cause inflammation in the liver, and the body’s response may leave you feeling drained, less able to concentrate, or unusually sleepy. Fatigue may occur with other symptoms such as nausea, reduced appetite, discomfort under the ribs, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Some people have few symptoms, so feeling well does not show whether the infection is active.

Arrange medical review if fatigue is new, persistent, or affecting work, study, or daily activities. A clinician can assess your symptoms and use blood tests to check liver inflammation and how the infection is behaving. Keep a simple record of energy levels, sleep, appetite, urine or stool changes, and any medicines or supplements. Rest, regular fluids, and small balanced meals may help; avoid alcohol and do not start herbal products without checking first.

Seek urgent medical care for confusion, unusual drowsiness, vomiting that prevents drinking, severe abdominal pain, rapidly worsening yellow skin or eyes, or bleeding that is difficult to stop. Contact a clinician promptly if fatigue comes with dark urine, pale stools, fever, or swelling of the abdomen or legs.

Ask whether your fatigue could reflect active hepatitis B or another problem such as anaemia, poor sleep, or a medicine effect. You can also ask which liver tests are needed, whether household or sexual contacts should be assessed, and how often follow-up is appropriate.
