How common is facial swelling in insect bites and stings?

The body's local inflammatory response can produce redness, warmth, itching and swelling around a bite or sting. Loose tissue around the eyelids can look particularly swollen even when the bite is nearby rather than directly on the eyelid. A large local reaction and an allergic reaction are different patterns. Swelling on its own does not establish which one is happening.

Move away from the insect and gently wash the area. If a visible stinger remains, remove it promptly by scraping it away rather than squeezing the venom sac. A cool clean compress may ease discomfort. Avoid rubbing the area, because this can worsen irritation. Seek clinical advice if redness expands, pain becomes severe, pus appears or the skin remains increasingly hot and tender.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, widespread hives, faintness, collapse or repeated vomiting after a sting. Seek urgent assessment for eye pain, altered vision, swelling that prevents the eye opening, or a sting inside the mouth. These signs need rapid care whether or not a known allergy is present.
