How common is facial swelling in erysipelas?

Erysipelas can cause a clearly defined area of red, warm, tender skin. On the face, inflammation in the skin can make the cheek, eyelid, forehead or nearby area look puffy. Fever, chills or feeling unwell can occur alongside the skin changes. Facial swelling has many possible causes, so its presence does not identify erysipelas by itself.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for a new painful red swollen area on the face. A clinician can examine the skin, ask about the speed of change and decide whether treatment for a bacterial skin infection is needed. Avoid squeezing, scratching or applying irritating products. Note when the swelling began and whether it is spreading, as this helps the assessment.

Seek urgent help if swelling involves the lips, tongue or throat, breathing or swallowing is difficult, or there is confusion, severe weakness or rapid worsening. The eye area also needs urgent assessment when swelling is marked, vision changes, pain with eye movement or severe headache occurs. These warning signs need attention regardless of the suspected cause.
