How common is facial swelling in anaphylaxis?

In anaphylaxis, swelling may involve the lips, eyelids, tongue, or throat. It can develop alongside hives, itching, flushing, wheeze, vomiting, dizziness, or a feeling of faintness. The pattern and speed of change matter more than trying to identify the cause at home. Swelling alone does not identify anaphylaxis; clinicians consider the full set of symptoms and any recent exposure to a possible trigger.

If you have been prescribed an adrenaline auto-injector for a suspected severe allergic reaction, use it as instructed in your personal emergency plan and call emergency services. Avoid food, medicines, or other suspected triggers until you have been assessed. If symptoms are milder and stable, arrange prompt medical advice, particularly when the swelling is new, recurring, or follows an exposure.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, throat tightness, a hoarse voice, difficulty swallowing, tongue swelling, fainting, marked dizziness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Do not drive yourself if you feel unwell or light-headed. Even if symptoms improve after emergency treatment, follow the advice given about observation and follow-up.

Ask what features of your episode suggest anaphylaxis, whether allergy assessment is appropriate, and which medicines should be avoided. If you receive an auto-injector, ask for a demonstration and a written plan for future reactions.
