How common is excessive thirst in prediabetes?

When blood glucose is higher than usual, the body may pass more glucose into urine. Water follows it, which can lead to more urination and a strong need to drink. Dry mouth, hot weather, exercise, salty foods, some medicines, and other health conditions can also increase thirst. A symptom needs to be considered alongside your medical history and, when appropriate, a blood glucose test.

Drink water when you are thirsty and notice whether the change is persistent, especially if it comes with frequent urination, tiredness, blurred vision, or unexplained weight change. Arrange a routine appointment to discuss ongoing thirst. Bring a brief note of when it occurs, how often you urinate, medicines or supplements you use, and any recent illness. Do not restrict fluids in an attempt to control the symptom.

Seek urgent medical assessment if thirst is accompanied by vomiting, abdominal pain, deep or rapid breathing, confusion, marked weakness, or difficulty staying awake. These symptoms can signal a serious problem with fluid balance or blood glucose and need prompt evaluation. Seek advice promptly if you cannot keep fluids down or symptoms are worsening.

Ask whether blood glucose testing is appropriate, whether any medicines could contribute to dry mouth or urination, and which symptoms should prompt earlier follow-up. If you already have prediabetes, ask how your individual results and daily habits fit into your care plan.
