Short answer

Excessive Body Hair is a common presentation of Hirsutism, particularly when coarse hair grows in areas influenced by androgen hormones.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How hirsutism is recognised

Hirsutism refers to coarse, dark hair growth in a pattern more typical of male hormone influence, such as the face, chin, upper lip, chest, abdomen, or back. Hair density and colour naturally vary between people and families. A clinician considers the pattern, how quickly it appeared, menstrual history when relevant, medicines, and other signs of hormone imbalance. Excessive hair by itself does not establish hirsutism or identify its cause.

Managing unwanted hair

Temporary methods include trimming, shaving, threading, waxing, or depilatory products; each can irritate skin or cause ingrown hairs. Patch-test a new product and avoid applying it to broken or inflamed skin. A clinician may discuss treatments that slow hair growth or address an underlying hormone-related condition. Laser reduction or electrolysis may also be considered after a skin and hair assessment.

When assessment matters

Arrange a medical review if coarse hair appears suddenly or increases quickly, especially with irregular periods, new acne, scalp hair thinning, voice change, or increased muscle development. Painful boils, widespread irritation, or recurrent ingrown hairs also deserve care. Sudden changes with severe abdominal pain or feeling very unwell need urgent assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the hair pattern fits hirsutism, whether medicines or hormone symptoms should be reviewed, and which hair-removal method is safest for your skin tone and hair type. Discuss what improvement to expect and how to manage irritation.

Questions people ask

Does all unwanted hair represent hirsutism?

No. Normal variation, family traits, medicines, and other causes can produce unwanted hair; pattern and history guide assessment.

Should I stop removing hair before an appointment?

Ask the clinic. Keeping a brief record of when growth changed and which methods you use may be more useful than changing your routine.
