How common is earache in tonsillitis?

The tonsils sit at the back of the throat. Nerves serving the throat and ear have shared pathways, so inflammation around the tonsils can be experienced as ear pain even when the ear itself is healthy. It may be more obvious when swallowing and can affect one or both ears.

A sore throat, swollen tonsils, painful swallowing, tender neck glands, fever, or changes in the voice can occur with tonsillitis. An examination is useful when symptoms are pronounced because earache can also come from a separate ear, tooth, or jaw condition.

Sip fluids regularly and choose softer foods if swallowing hurts. Warm or cool drinks can be soothing depending on what feels comfortable. Consider simple pain relief only if it is suitable for you, and follow the packet directions or advice from a pharmacist.

Avoid smoking and smoky environments, which can further irritate the throat. Do not share cups or utensils while you are unwell, and wash hands after coughing or touching your mouth.

Get medical advice if throat or ear pain is getting worse, swallowing is becoming difficult, you have a persistent fever, or symptoms recur. Seek urgent assessment if you cannot swallow saliva, have trouble breathing, develop severe one-sided throat swelling, cannot open your mouth normally, or become dehydrated.

Ask whether the ear pain appears referred from the throat, whether testing is needed, how to manage swallowing pain, and which warning signs need urgent review.
