Short answer

Earache is a very common presentation of Swimmer's Ear and may become sharper when the outer ear is moved or pressed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Pain may worsen when the outer ear is touched.

What the pain can feel like

Swimmer's ear affects the skin-lined outer ear canal. Moisture, irritation, or a minor break in that skin can allow inflammation to develop. Pain may start as tenderness or itching and become more noticeable when you pull the ear, press the small flap in front of the canal, chew, or lie on that side.

The canal can also become swollen, so sound may seem muffled and there may be a feeling of blockage. Earache can arise from other conditions too, so these features support an assessment but do not establish the cause on their own.

Practical next steps

Keep the ear dry while it is sore. Do not insert cotton buds, fingers, earbuds, or home remedies into the canal; they can damage the skin or push debris further in. Simple pain relief that is appropriate for you may help while you arrange advice from a pharmacist or clinician.

If treatment is prescribed, use it exactly as directed and mention previous ear surgery, a perforated eardrum, skin allergies, or diabetes before choosing drops.

When to seek care

Contact a clinician promptly for discharge, increasing swelling, reduced hearing, fever, pain that is difficult to control, or symptoms that are not settling. Seek urgent care if pain is severe and spreading beyond the ear, if there is swelling behind the ear, dizziness, facial weakness, or you feel significantly unwell.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the canal is inflamed, whether wax or debris needs professional removal, how to keep the ear dry, and when it is safe to resume swimming.

Questions people ask

Does swimmer's ear always follow swimming?

No. Moisture is a common trigger, but irritation from objects in the ear or skin conditions can also contribute.

Can I wear earphones while my ear hurts?

It is sensible to avoid anything that presses into or blocks the sore ear canal until it has been assessed or has settled.
