How common is difficulty swallowing in stomach cancer?

Swallowing depends on the throat and oesophagus moving food into the stomach. Changes near the top of the stomach or at its junction with the oesophagus can sometimes lead to a sensation of resistance, early fullness, or food not moving normally.

Difficulty may feel different from indigestion: some people notice sticking after a few mouthfuls, discomfort when swallowing, or a need to take smaller bites. The symptom pattern does not tell you its cause without a clinical assessment.

Book a medical appointment if swallowing becomes troublesome, lasts, or is affecting your usual meals. Keep a short record of foods that trigger it and any nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, reflux, reduced appetite, tiredness, or weight change.

Choose softer foods and small, well-chewed mouthfuls if these are easier, but do not rely on dietary changes to manage persistent symptoms without evaluation.

Get urgent help for an inability to swallow saliva, a sensation of a complete food blockage, breathing difficulty, severe chest pain, or signs of dehydration. Seek prompt care for vomiting blood, black stools, repeated vomiting, or rapidly worsening swallowing difficulty.

Ask whether the location and pattern of your symptoms suggest a problem in the throat, oesophagus, or stomach. You can also ask whether an examination, blood tests, imaging, or a camera test is needed and how to eat and drink safely before testing.
