How common is difficulty passing urine in prostate cancer?

The prostate sits around part of the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body. Changes in or around the prostate can narrow that passage. A hesitant start, weak stream, straining, dribbling, or a feeling that the bladder has not emptied can result. These symptoms need an assessment because they may also occur with non-cancerous prostate enlargement, inflammation, medicines, or a urinary infection.

Arrange a medical appointment if the change is new, persistent, or getting worse. Describe when it began, whether it happens during the day or night, and whether there is pain, blood in the urine, weight change, or bone pain. A clinician may ask about your health history, examine you, and decide whether urine testing, a blood test, or imaging is appropriate.

Seek urgent medical care if you cannot pass urine at all, have severe lower abdominal pain or swelling, fever with urinary symptoms, visible blood in the urine, or feel suddenly very unwell. Prompt care is also sensible when urinary difficulty is rapidly worsening.

Ask what may be causing the obstruction, which tests could clarify it, and what symptoms should prompt urgent contact. If prostate cancer is being investigated or treated, ask how the urinary symptoms fit with your individual situation and treatment plan.
