How common is diarrhoea in irritable bowel syndrome?

Irritable bowel syndrome affects bowel function without causing the visible tissue damage seen in some other bowel diseases. The diarrhoeal pattern can include loose stools, urgency, repeated trips to the toilet, abdominal discomfort, bloating, or a feeling that a bowel movement was incomplete. Pain often changes with passing stool, and symptoms may fluctuate over time.

Diarrhoea by itself does not establish irritable bowel syndrome. Infection, coeliac disease, thyroid problems, medication effects, and inflammatory bowel disease can produce similar symptoms.
