How common is diarrhoea in amoebiasis?

Amoebiasis is an intestinal infection caused by a parasite. Some people have loose stools with cramping, urgency, nausea, or a feeling of incomplete emptying. The illness can range from mild bowel upset to more troublesome symptoms. Diarrhoea has many possible causes, including other infections, food-related irritation, and medicine effects, so a diagnosis depends on the full history and, when needed, testing rather than the bowel symptom alone.

Prioritise fluids and take small, regular sips if frequent stools make drinking difficult. Use oral rehydration solution if a clinician or pharmacist advises it. Wash hands carefully after using the toilet and before preparing food, and avoid preparing food for others while unwell. Arrange medical advice if symptoms continue, especially after travel or a possible exposure to unsafe food or water. Treatment should be chosen by a clinician when amoebiasis is suspected or confirmed.

Seek urgent medical assessment for blood in the stool, severe or increasing abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, fever with worsening illness, repeated vomiting, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine, dizziness, or marked weakness. Young children, older adults, pregnant people, and people with weakened immunity may need earlier clinical advice when diarrhoea develops.

Ask whether stool testing is needed, how to replace fluids safely, and whether your travel, water, food, medicine, or contact history changes the likely cause. Tell the clinician about blood, fever, pain, or dehydration symptoms.
