Short answer

Dark urine is a common presentation of Hepatitis B, especially when liver inflammation affects bile flow.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Symptom
Tea-coloured or brown urine can occur with hepatitis B.
Assessment
Urine colour alone cannot diagnose hepatitis B.
Act promptly
Seek advice for new dark urine, especially with yellowing.

What dark urine can mean

Hepatitis B can inflame the liver and interfere with the normal movement of bile. This may make urine look tea-coloured, brown, or noticeably darker than usual. Dark urine may appear alongside yellowing of the skin or eyes, pale stools, nausea, reduced appetite, discomfort under the ribs, or unusual tiredness. Some people with hepatitis B have few or no symptoms, so urine colour alone cannot show whether hepatitis B is present or indicate how active it is.

A change in urine colour can also have other explanations, including dehydration, medicines, foods, blood, or another liver or urinary problem. A clinician can assess the pattern with an examination and tests such as liver-function blood tests and hepatitis testing.

What to do next

If dark urine is new, persistent, or accompanied by yellow eyes, arrange medical advice promptly. Drink normally unless a clinician has given you fluid restrictions, and note when the change began, its colour, and any related symptoms. Do not start herbal products or stop prescribed medicines without checking first. If hepatitis B is already diagnosed, follow the monitoring plan and tell your healthcare professional about the change.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent medical help if dark urine occurs with confusion, marked drowsiness, fainting, severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, or rapidly increasing yellowing. Urgent assessment is also sensible if you cannot keep fluids down or are passing very little urine. These features can signal significant illness and should not be judged by urine colour alone.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what tests are needed to check liver inflammation and hepatitis B activity, whether any medicine or supplement could be affecting your urine, and which symptoms should prompt same-day care. If hepatitis B is confirmed, ask how follow-up will be arranged and how to reduce the risk of passing the infection to others.
