How common is dark circles in atopic dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis can cause itch, dryness, redness, and irritation around the eyes. Repeated rubbing may make the skin look darker or more shadowed and can add swelling or fine lines. The colour may remain after an active flare settles. Dark circles also have many other possible contributors, including inherited features, tiredness, allergies, dehydration, and natural facial anatomy, so the appearance does not identify atopic dermatitis by itself.

Avoid rubbing and keep nails short. Use a bland moisturiser recommended for the eye area, applied carefully without getting it into the eyes. Cool compresses may soothe itch and puffiness. Avoid fragranced cosmetics and new eye products during a flare, and follow the treatment plan prescribed for your dermatitis. Do not apply strong steroid creams or untested lightening products near the eyes without medical advice.

Arrange a review if eyelid irritation keeps returning, interferes with sleep, or does not improve with your usual care. Seek prompt medical attention for eye pain, light sensitivity, vision change, marked swelling, pus, or a blistering rash. Sudden swelling of the face with breathing difficulty needs emergency help.
