How common is coughing up phlegm in COPD?

Short answer
Coughing Up Phlegm is a very common presentation of COPD, but phlegm alone does not identify its cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why COPD can cause phlegm
COPD can irritate and narrow the airways. The lining may produce more mucus, and it can be harder to clear it because airflow is limited. A productive cough may be part of a person’s usual COPD pattern, especially after waking. The amount, thickness, or colour can change during a flare-up, but these changes can also occur with an infection or another airway problem.
What you can do
Follow the COPD action plan agreed with your clinician and use inhalers exactly as prescribed. Keep track of your usual cough, breathlessness, and phlegm so a new change is easier to spot. Drink fluids if this is suitable for you, and avoid smoke, vaping, dust, and strong fumes that can irritate the airways. Do not start leftover antibiotics or change inhaler doses without clinical advice.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt medical advice for a clear worsening in breathlessness, more phlegm than usual, a new feverish feeling, chest pain, or blood in the phlegm. Seek urgent help if breathing becomes severely difficult, you cannot speak comfortably because of breathlessness, your lips or face look blue or grey, or you feel confused or unusually drowsy.
Questions for your clinician
Ask what your normal phlegm pattern is likely to be, which changes should trigger your action plan, and whether your inhaler technique needs checking. If phlegm keeps changing, ask whether an infection, reflux, allergies, or another cause should be considered.

Questions people ask
Does phlegm colour confirm an infection?
No. A colour change is worth discussing alongside changes in breathlessness, feverishness, and how unwell you feel, but colour alone cannot confirm the cause.
Should I stop coughing to clear phlegm?
Coughing helps move mucus out of the airways. Discuss persistent or troublesome coughing with a clinician, particularly if it disrupts sleep or comes with worsening breathlessness.
