How common are cold hands and feet in hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism can slow the body’s metabolic activity and reduce how much heat it produces. Blood flow may be prioritised toward the core, leaving fingers and toes feeling cool. Some people also notice tiredness, dry skin, constipation, slower thinking, low mood, or changes in weight.

Cold hands and feet have many other possible explanations, including cool surroundings, reduced circulation, Raynaud’s phenomenon, some medicines, and other health conditions. The symptom does not show which cause is responsible, and it does not establish that someone has hypothyroidism.

Arrange a primary-care assessment if the cold sensation is persistent, new, or accompanied by other symptoms of an underactive thyroid. A clinician may ask about your symptom pattern, examine you, and request thyroid blood tests. Mention whether both sides are affected, whether fingers change colour, and whether warmth reliably improves the feeling.

Keep your hands and feet comfortably warm, avoid sudden cold exposure, and do not start thyroid medicine or supplements without medical advice. If you already take thyroid replacement, take it as prescribed and report symptoms that continue or change.

Seek urgent medical help for a hand or foot that suddenly becomes very cold, pale, blue, numb, severely painful, or difficult to move, especially on one side. Prompt assessment is also needed for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, confusion, or marked weakness. These features need attention regardless of whether hypothyroidism is present.
