How common are chills in malaria?

Malaria can produce episodes in which chills or shaking are followed by fever and then sweating. The timing and intensity can vary, and early illness may resemble other infections. Malaria is linked to exposure in areas where infected mosquitoes transmit the parasite, so recent travel or residence is a key part of the history. Chills by themselves do not confirm malaria, but chills with fever after possible exposure should be assessed urgently rather than watched at home.

Contact a medical service urgently if you develop chills or fever during travel in a malaria-risk area or after returning from one. Tell the clinician every country and area visited, the dates of travel, mosquito-bite prevention used, and when symptoms began. Testing may need to be arranged promptly and sometimes repeated if the first test does not explain the illness. Rest and sip fluids while arranging care, but do not delay assessment to see whether an episode passes.

Go to emergency care for confusion, extreme drowsiness, seizures, trouble breathing, fainting, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or inability to drink. Fever with chills after travel can become serious quickly, especially in children, pregnancy, older age, or reduced immunity. Tell emergency staff about travel immediately so malaria can be considered without delay.
