How common is easy bruising in sun-damaged skin?

Repeated sun exposure can reduce the skin’s supportive structure and make small blood vessels easier to injure. A minor bump, rubbing, or pressure may then leave a purple, red, or brown mark, often on the backs of the hands, forearms, or other exposed areas. The mark can change colour as it fades. Easy bruising may occur alongside thin, wrinkled, unevenly coloured skin, but bruises can also have other explanations, including medicines, nutritional problems, or a bleeding disorder.

Protect exposed skin with long sleeves, shade, and broad-spectrum sunscreen. Moisturiser can reduce dryness and cracking, while care around sharp edges and rough activities may limit knocks. Keep a brief record of new bruises, including where they appeared and whether there was an obvious injury. Do not stop prescribed blood-thinning or other medicines without medical advice; mention all medicines and supplements at a review.

Arrange a medical assessment if bruises appear without a clear reason, become more frequent, are unusually large, or occur with nosebleeds, bleeding gums, blood in urine or stool, marked tiredness, or fever. Seek urgent help for bleeding that will not stop, a rapidly enlarging painful bruise, severe weakness, or a head injury while taking a blood thinner.
