How common are breast skin changes in breast cancer?

Breast cancer can affect the tissue beneath the skin and change how the surface looks or feels. The change may be subtle, localized, or associated with a lump, nipple discharge, or altered breast shape. Skin changes also occur with infections, inflammation, injury, or benign breast conditions, so their presence does not by itself establish cancer. A clinician assesses the breast and may recommend imaging or tissue testing based on the finding.

Look for a new change compared with your usual appearance, including persistent dimpling, an orange-peel texture, scaling, redness, swelling, or nipple inversion. Note when it began and whether it is changing. Do not delay assessment while waiting for it to disappear, particularly when the change is one-sided or accompanied by a lump or discharge. Arrange a breast examination with a qualified clinician.

Seek prompt medical assessment for a new or persistent skin change, a rapidly enlarging area of swelling, a new lump, bloody nipple discharge, or a nipple that becomes newly inverted. Urgent care is appropriate for severe redness, fever, rapidly worsening pain, or feeling very unwell, because infection may also need quick treatment.
