How common is a breast lump in fibroadenoma?

A fibroadenoma is a benign solid growth made up of glandular and connective breast tissue. It may feel smooth, round, rubbery, and separate from nearby tissue, although texture varies. Some fibroadenomas remain stable while others change with hormonal influences. These features can suggest a fibroadenoma but cannot establish the diagnosis by touch. Clinical examination and breast imaging help determine whether further testing is needed.

Arrange an assessment for a new lump or a noticeable change in an existing one. Tell the clinician about its timing, growth, tenderness, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any medicines that affect hormones. Depending on the findings, monitoring may be appropriate, while a biopsy or removal may be discussed if the diagnosis is uncertain, the mass grows, or it causes discomfort. Keep scheduled reviews even when the lump feels familiar.

Seek prompt review if the lump enlarges, becomes fixed, causes marked pain, or appears with skin dimpling, nipple inversion, unusual discharge, armpit swelling, redness, or fever. Sudden severe symptoms or feeling seriously unwell call for urgent care. A prior fibroadenoma does not explain every future breast change, so new findings should be assessed separately.

Ask what the examination and imaging suggest, whether tissue sampling is needed, and how often the lump should be reviewed. Discuss what growth or symptom change would alter the plan, and ask how discomfort can be managed if observation is chosen.
