How common is a breast lump in a breast cyst?

A breast cyst is a fluid-filled sac within breast tissue. It may feel soft or firm and can become more noticeable or uncomfortable around hormonal changes. Some cysts are small and found only on imaging, while others can be felt as a distinct lump. Touch alone cannot confirm that a lump is a cyst, because other breast changes can feel similar. Ultrasound is often useful for showing whether a lump contains fluid.

Have a new or changing lump checked by a healthcare professional. Keep a brief record of when you notice tenderness, enlargement, or changes linked with your menstrual cycle. If the assessment suggests a cyst, it may only need observation; a painful or large cyst may be drained by a trained clinician. Do not attempt to puncture, massage, or drain it yourself, as this can injure the breast or introduce infection.

Seek prompt advice if a lump grows quickly, becomes very painful, or is accompanied by redness, warmth, fever, nipple discharge, skin dimpling, or nipple inversion. Arrange follow-up if a lump remains after a cyst has been drained or returns repeatedly. A new change deserves assessment even when a previous cyst was harmless.
