How common is persistent bone pain in Paget's disease of bone?

The pain may come from changes in the affected bone, nearby joints, or a fracture in bone that has become structurally weaker.

Paget's disease changes the normal cycle of bone breakdown and rebuilding. The affected bone may become enlarged or misshapen, which can alter how nearby joints and muscles carry load. Pain may be deep, localised, or linked with movement, and some people have no symptoms until the condition is found during an evaluation for another reason. Pain severity does not reliably show how much bone is affected.

Arrange an appointment when bone pain persists, limits activity, or occurs in a place where Paget's disease has been diagnosed. Note the painful area, whether it is present at rest or with movement, and any stiffness, warmth, change in shape, or difficulty walking. Your clinician may review previous scans, examine nearby joints, or discuss blood tests and imaging. Use only pain treatments that fit your other medicines and medical conditions.

Get urgent help after a fall or sudden pain that makes a limb hard to use, or if you notice a new deformity, marked swelling, weakness, numbness, or trouble walking. Prompt assessment is also appropriate when pain changes quickly or becomes severe without an obvious reason.
